The Dalai Lama, a lifelong champion of non-violence candidly stated that terrorism cannot be tackled by applying the principle of ahimsa because the minds of terrorists are closed.

“It is difficult to deal with terrorism through non-violence,” the Tibetan spiritual leader said delivering the Madhavrao Scindia Memorial Lecture at New Delhi.

He termed terrorism as the worst kind of violence which is not carried by a few mad people but by those who are very brilliant and educated.

“They (terrorists) are very brilliant and educated…but a strong ill feeling is bred in them. Their minds are closed,” the Dalai Lama said.

He said the only way to tackle terrorism is through prevention.

The head of the Tibetan government-in-exile left the audience stunned when he said “I love President George W Bush.” He went on to add how he and the US President instantly struck a chord in their first meeting unlike politicians who take a while to develop close ties.

“I told him ‘I love you but some of your policies I oppose’,” said the spiritual leader to a loud round of applause from the audience which included Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi, Election Commissioner Navin Chawla and several ministers, diplomats and artistes.

The Dalai Lama said in the aftermath of 9/11 attacks he had asked Bush to spend billions of dollars on education and promotion of non-violence instead of warfare.

In his teachings, the religious leader linked the failing economy to a lack of spirituality. He stressed the necessary balance between advancement in modern education while still preserving traditional Tibetan culture and spirituality. He added that all should take care of their health as well as protect the environment.

“Lack of spirituality and culture is the main cause behind the rampant corruption in the world. People have become selfish and materialistic, which has led to the economic slowdown,” His Holiness said.

While in Sarnath, the Dalai Lama has met with many followers from the North Eastern states of India and has been presented with a 2.5 meter-high statue of Buddha, gifted by Indonesia-based interfaith spiritualist and author, Anand Krishna, as a symbol of Tibetan and Indonesian ties. “Representing the peace loving people of Indonesia, I salute His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama for his untiring and relentless efforts in finding peaceful solutions to protect the historical and cultural heritage of Tibet based on tolerance and respect,” Anand Krishna stated.

The statue will be permanently housed in the CIHTS.

Anand Krishna delivers 2.5 Meter Statue of the Lord Buddha from Indonesia to the Spiritual Leader of the People of Tibet.

(1/12/2009) Anand Krishna, an Indonesian inter-faith spiritualist leader and founder of the Bali and Jakarta based Anand Krishna Center flew with 6 members of his organization to Sarnath, Uttar Pradesh in India to present a statue of the Lord Buddha to His Holiness, Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama.

The 2.5 meter high statue was carved taken from the same stone quarry used in the original construction of the ninth-century Borobudur temple in Central Java. Carved by a Balinese sculptor, the statue will be consecrated by the Dalai Lama and installed in the compound of the Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies (Deemed University), Sarnath, (Uttar Pradesh), India.

Anand Krishna the gift from Indonesia to the Dalai Lama is intended to re-strengthen the spiritual and cultural ties between the peoples of Indonesia and Tibet and extend support to the non-violent struggle to protect the cultural heritage of Tibet. According to Krishna: “Representing the peace loving people of Indonesia, I salute His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama for his untiring and relentless efforts in finding peaceful solutions to protect the historical and cultural heritage of Tibet based on tolerance and respect.”

A Full Circle Historically

Explaining the deeper connections that exist between Indonesia and the people of Tibet, Krishna continued: “In 1012 A.D., Indian Buddhist monk and scholar Atisha traveled to the Indonesian archipelago and continued his journey to Tibet where he taught the ancient art of Tong-Len meditation which he learnt from an indigenous Indonesian Master, Dharmakirti Svarnadvipi, a name very close to the heart of His Holiness and the people of Tibet.” Adding, “By offering this statue from Indonesia to His Holiness, and to be placed on Indian soil – I hope, I pray that the peoples of Tibet, India and Indonesia are united in love, peace and harmony.” Further said Anand Krishna.”

Anand Ashram Chairperson, Ms. Maya Safira Muchtar, told the press she regrets that not many Indonesians are aware of the historical bond between the Indonesian Archipelago and Tibet: “It truly is a shame that most modern Indonesians are unaware of the existence of grand masters Atisha and Dharmakirti-Svarnadvipi whose works had significant contribution towards the magnificent cultural and spiritual traditions of Tibet. This humble offering is an attempt to correct this.”

Ms. Muchtar considers Anand Krishna’ visit to His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama as the one of the most significant and historical moments in the histories of Tibet, India and Indonesia, adding: “We all belong to the one and same Indus Valley Civilization, together we can respond wisely and compassionately to the problems faced by our world. Together we can realize our common dream of ‘One Earth, One Sky, and One Humankind.’”

Anand Krishna

Anand Krishna has written more than 120 books in the past 10 years, both in English and Indonesian, on various subjects including spirituality and philosophy, Originally from Solo in Central Java, Krishna is also recognized for his many social and humanitarian activities, and the promotion of interfaith understanding and appreciation.

The revered Tibetan spiritual leader consecrated the Buddha statue, which is to be installed permanently later in the Kalachakra Temple in the institute’s compound.

Internationally recognised Indonesia-based interfaith spiritualist and author Anand Krishna offered the statue to the Dalai Lama as a token of restrengthening the spiritual and cultural ties between the peoples of Indonesia and Tibet.

The unique Buddha statue is made from the same source materials used to build the 9th CE Borobudur Temple, regarded as the world’s largest Buddhist temple, in Muntilan in Central Java.

The offering also aims to support His Holiness’ non-violent struggle to protect the cultural heritage of Tibet, Anand Krishna, founder of the Jakarta-based Anand Ashram Foundation, said in a statement on its website.
“Representing the peace loving people of Indonesia, I salute His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama for his untiring and relentless efforts in finding peaceful solutions to protect the historical and cultural heritage of Tibet based on tolerance and respect,” said Anand.

“By offering this statue from Indonesia to His Holiness, and to be placed on Indian soil – I hope, I pray that the peoples of Tibet, India and Indonesia are united in love, peace and harmony,” he added.

“In 1012 AD, Indian Buddhist monk/scholar Atisha traveled to the Indonesian archipelago, and went to Tibet to preach the ancient art of Tong-Len meditation which he learnt from an indigenous Indonesian Master, Dharmakirti Svarnadvipi, a name very close to the heart of His Holiness and the people of Tibet,” Anand puts it.

Anand was joined by six other officials of Anand Ashram Foundation in Sarnath to present the Buddha statue.

Mr. Anand Krishna’s visit to His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama will be one of the most significant and historical moments in the histories of Tibet, India and Indonesia, Anand Ashram Foundation chairwoman Maya Muchtar said in the same statement.

“We all belong to the one and same Indus Valley Civilization, together we can respond wisely and compassionately to the problems faced by our world. Together we can realize our common dream of ‘One Earth, One Sky, and One Humankind,” Ms. Muchtar said.

In thanking Anand for the offering, the Dalai Lama described the interfaith spiritualist as a supporter of Tibet’s cause.

An Indonesian national of Indian descent, Anand Krishna has written more than 120 books in the past 10 years, both in English and Indonesian, on varied subjects like spirituality, philosophy and humanity. He is also recognised for his other social and humanitarian activities related to promotion of interfaith understanding and appreciation.

The morning fog has not cleared away when at His Holiness Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama inaugurated and blessed a 2.5m high Buddha statue humbly offered by Indonesian interfaith spiritualist Anand Krishna. Conducted at the Central Institue of Higher Tibetan Studies (Deemed University), Sarnath (Uttar Pradesh), India, the inauguration was covered by several Indian media, e.g. K TV, Z News, DD News and Hindustan Times. The Buddha statue is made of the same source materials used to build the 9th CE Borobudur Temple in Muntilan, Central Java, Indonesia, and was offered to reaffirm the spiritual and cultural ties between the peoples of Indonesia and Tibet, also to support His Holiness’ non-violent struggle to protect the cultural heritage of Tibet.

“Representing the peace loving people of Indonesia, I salute His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama for his untiring and relentless efforts in finding peaceful solutions to protect the historical and cultural heritage of Tibet based on tolerance and respect,” said Anand Krishna prior to his departure to India a few days ago. He added that, “By offering this statue from Indonesia to His Holiness, and to be placed on Indian soil – I hope, I pray that the peoples of Tibet, India and Indonesia are united in love, peace and harmony.”

Before entering the ceremonial podium, His Holiness Dalai Lama expressed his immense gratitude and appreciation for the offered Buddha statue. After the sacred and joyful ceremony, His Holiness allowed the opportunity for group photo with Anand Krishna and six members of Anand Ashram Foundation Indonesia (Affiliated with United Nations). Unexpectedly, His Holiness granted a statement: “Press, you may don’t know, thousands years ago, one Buddhist master named Atisha Divankara, received the teaching from a master who resided in Indonesia. So, in Tibetan Buddhism history Atisha Divankara is considered a very very important Buddhist messenger. So he was the most important Guru from Indonesia. So, from that way, we [Tibetans] have some close spiritual connection [with Indonesia], although physically [we are] very far.”

Afterwards, Anand Krishna also gave his statement: “With Love and Harmony, we can unite India, Tibet and Indonesia. Through this union we can achieve the world peace.”

His Holiness: “Indonesia and Tibet share a close spiritual connection.”
